It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our co-founder, Gerry Pond.
Gerry helped build Mariner on a simple but ambitious belief: that world-class technology companies could be created in Atlantic Canada. A passionate entrepreneur, an optimistic leader, and a tireless advocate for the region, he challenged us to think bigger, embrace innovation, and believe in what was possible. He saw a future for Atlantic Canada that few could imagine and then dedicated himself to making it a reality. Through Mariner, and later, East Valley Ventures, he inspired countless others to do the same.
More than anything, Gerry believed in people.
He had a rare gift for seeing potential in others before they saw it in themselves, encouraging them to pursue opportunities they never thought possible. His influence can be found in the entrepreneurs, leaders, and innovators whose careers he helped shape, and in the companies and communities that continue to benefit from his vision.
Those who knew Gerry will remember his energy, curiosity, and unwavering optimism. Yet some of his greatest contributions happened quietly. He was a generous mentor, a trusted connector, and someone who never hesitated to make time for a conversation or lend a helping hand. He believed in opening doors for others and did so without seeking recognition.
His legacy is not only measured by the businesses he helped create, but by the people he encouraged, the confidence he instilled, and the culture of possibility he fostered across Atlantic Canada.
As we mourn his passing, our thoughts are with Gerry’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched.
Gerry often reminded us that there was still work to do, and one of the most meaningful ways we can honour him is by continuing to build, innovate, and invest in the people and communities he believed in so deeply.
Thank you, Gerry. Your impact will be felt for generations.
